Gemstone Guide

Last updated: May 2026

In Vedic astrology, gemstones (Ratnas) are considered powerful tools for channelling and amplifying the energies of the nine planets (Navagrahas). When prescribed correctly — based on your birth chart — a gemstone acts as a conduit, strengthening the positive influences of a benefic planet and helping to balance deficiencies in your chart.

Important: Gemstones should always be prescribed by a qualified Jyotishi after careful analysis of your birth chart. Wearing the wrong stone can amplify malefic planetary influences. Never wear a gemstone simply because of your Sun sign.

The Nine Planetary Gemstones

Ruby (Manik) — Sun (Surya)

Ruby strengthens the Sun's energy, supporting self-confidence, leadership, vitality, and authority. Recommended when the Sun is weak or unfavourably placed in the chart. Worn on the ring finger of the right hand, on a Sunday, in gold.

Pearl (Moti) — Moon (Chandra)

Pearl calms the mind, enhances emotional stability, and supports intuition and relationships with women. Set in silver and worn on the little finger on a Monday. Particularly helpful during Moon Mahadasha or when the Moon is afflicted.

Red Coral (Moonga) — Mars (Mangal)

Red Coral boosts energy, courage, and willpower. It is recommended for those with a weak Mars affecting health, property, or siblings. Set in copper or gold, worn on the ring finger on Tuesday.

Emerald (Panna) — Mercury (Budha)

Emerald sharpens intellect, improves communication, and supports business acumen and analytical thinking. Set in gold, worn on the little finger of the right hand on Wednesday.

Yellow Sapphire (Pukhraj) — Jupiter (Guru)

One of the most universally beneficial gemstones, Pukhraj attracts wisdom, wealth, and spiritual growth. Particularly helpful for those seeking marriage, children, or higher education. Set in gold on the index finger, worn on Thursday.

Diamond (Heera) / White Sapphire — Venus (Shukra)

Diamond enhances beauty, love, creativity, and material comforts. White Sapphire is an accessible alternative. Set in silver or platinum, worn on the middle finger on Friday.

Blue Sapphire (Neelam) — Saturn (Shani)

The most powerful and fastest-acting gemstone — and the most sensitive. Blue Sapphire must only be worn after a careful trial period, as it can be both extraordinarily beneficial and deeply challenging depending on Saturn's placement in your chart. Set in silver or iron, worn on the middle finger on Saturday.

Hessonite (Gomed) — Rahu

Hessonite garnet balances Rahu's energy, supporting ambition, focus, and protection from confusion and illusion. Set in silver, worn on the middle finger on a Saturday or Wednesday.

Cat's Eye (Lehsunia) — Ketu

Cat's Eye protects against unknown dangers, supports spiritual progress, and aids those going through Ketu Mahadasha. Set in silver, worn on the middle finger on a Thursday.

Quality Matters

For astrological purposes, gemstones must be:

Before Wearing a Gemstone

A traditional consecration ritual (Prana Pratishtha) is recommended before wearing an astrological gemstone for the first time. The stone is cleansed with Panchagavya or raw milk, energised with the corresponding planet's mantra, and activated on the auspicious day and time for that planet.

Our Jyotishis can advise on the correct gemstone, carat weight, metal setting, finger, day, and time for your specific chart — as well as recommend trustworthy sources for certified natural stones.
