Vedic Astrology Basics

Last updated: May 2026

Vedic astrology (Jyotish, or "the science of light") is one of the oldest systems of astrology in the world, rooted in the ancient Indian scriptures known as the Vedas. Unlike Western astrology, which uses the tropical zodiac aligned to the seasons, Jyotish uses the sidereal zodiac — aligned to the actual positions of constellations in the sky.

The Birth Chart (Kundali)

At the heart of Jyotish is the Kundali or birth chart — a map of the sky at the exact moment and place of your birth. It shows the positions of the Sun, Moon, and planets across twelve houses and nine grahas (celestial bodies). Reading this chart reveals your personality traits, life path, karmic patterns, and the timing of significant life events.

The Nine Grahas

Jyotish works with nine planetary bodies called Navagrahas:

The Twelve Rashis (Zodiac Signs)

The zodiac is divided into twelve rashis — Mesha (Aries) through Meena (Pisces). Each rashi occupies 30° of the sky and carries distinct qualities, elements (fire, earth, air, water), and ruling planets. Your Lagna (Ascendant) — the rashi rising on the eastern horizon at birth — is considered the most important point in your chart.

The Twelve Bhavas (Houses)

The birth chart is also divided into twelve bhavas, each governing a specific area of life:

Getting Started

The best way to explore Vedic astrology is to have your birth chart read by an experienced Jyotishi. All you need is your date, time, and place of birth. A personalised reading will give you far more insight than any generalised horoscope.
