Kaal Sarp Dosh occurs when all seven planets in a birth chart are hemmed between Rahu and Ketu. This article explains its types, effects, and traditional Vedic remedies.
What is Kaal Sarp Dosh?
Kaal Sarp Dosh (also spelled Kaal Sarpa Yoga) occurs when all seven classical planets — Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, and Saturn — are placed between the lunar nodes Rahu and Ketu in a birth chart. Rahu and Ketu are always exactly 180 degrees apart. When all seven planets fall on one side of this Rahu-Ketu axis, it creates this powerful planetary configuration.
The 12 Types of Kaal Sarp Dosh
Depending on which house Rahu occupies in the birth chart, there are 12 named types, each with its own serpent name and specific area of life affected:
- Anant (Rahu in 1st house) — Obstacles in self-development and personal identity
- Kulik (Rahu in 2nd) — Challenges with family wealth and speech
- Vasuki (Rahu in 3rd) — Sibling discord and communication hurdles
- Shankhapal (Rahu in 4th) — Property and maternal relationship difficulties
- Padma (Rahu in 5th) — Delays in childbirth and higher education
- Mahapadma (Rahu in 6th) — Health issues and enemy-related obstacles
- Takshak (Rahu in 7th) — Marital discord and partnership issues
- Karkotak (Rahu in 8th) — Sudden losses and inheritance disputes
- Shankhanaad (Rahu in 9th) — Obstacles in fortune and father relationship
- Patak (Rahu in 10th) — Career instability and professional setbacks
- Vishakata (Rahu in 11th) — Hindrances in gains and elder sibling matters
- Sheshaanaag (Rahu in 12th) — Expenditures, isolation, and foreign settlement delays
Common Effects
Individuals with Kaal Sarp Dosh often experience persistent delays in major life milestones, recurring obstacles despite genuine effort, vivid dreams involving serpents or water, health issues of a chronic or mysterious nature, and a feeling of working against an unseen force. However, it is important to understand that not all 12 types are equally malefic — some can actually bring exceptional focus and worldly success.
Traditional Vedic Remedies
The most powerful remedy is performing the Kaal Sarp Dosh Puja at Trimbakeshwar (near Nashik, Maharashtra), the only Jyotirlingam where this puja is traditionally authorised. Other remedies include regular chanting of the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra and the Rahu-Ketu Beej mantras, wearing the prescribed Nag Panchami gemstone, performing Nag Puja on Nag Panchami, and reciting the Sarpa Suktam.
