Vastu Shastra is the ancient Indian science of architecture and space. Aligning your home with Vastu principles can improve health, prosperity, and harmony. Here is a room-by-room guide.
What is Vastu Shastra?
Vastu Shastra (Sanskrit: वास्तु शास्त्र) is the traditional Hindu science of architecture and spatial design. Its name translates to "the science of dwelling." Rooted in the Vedas — particularly the Atharva Veda and the Sthapatya Veda — Vastu principles aim to harmonise the built environment with the five elements (Panchabhutas): Earth (Prithvi), Water (Jal), Fire (Agni), Air (Vayu), and Space (Akash). A Vastu-aligned home is believed to optimise the flow of positive cosmic energy (prana), promoting health, prosperity, and harmony for its occupants.
The Five Elements and the Eight Directions
Each of the eight cardinal and inter-cardinal directions is governed by a specific deity, planet, and element:
- North (Kubera) — Wealth and career opportunities; ruled by Mercury
- Northeast (Ishaan) — Spirituality and new beginnings; the most sacred direction; ruled by Jupiter
- East (Indra) — Health and prosperity; associated with the rising Sun
- Southeast (Agni) — Fire element; ideal zone for the kitchen
- South (Yama) — Stability and rest; ruled by Mars
- Southwest (Nairiti) — Earth element; strength and stability; ideal for master bedroom
- West (Varuna) — Success and gains; ruled by Saturn
- Northwest (Vayu) — Air element; movement and change; suitable for guest rooms
Room-by-Room Vastu Guide
Main Entrance: The most auspicious directions for the main door are North, Northeast, or East. These directions welcome positive solar and cosmic energy into the home. Avoid a main entrance in the South or Southwest.
Kitchen: Should be in the Southeast (Agni/fire zone) or alternatively the Northwest. The cook should ideally face East while cooking. Avoid placing the kitchen in the Northeast or Southwest.
Master Bedroom: The Southwest is ideal for the master bedroom, as this direction represents earth energy and stability. The bed head should point South or West for restful sleep.
Living Room: North, East, or Northeast is ideal. Keep this space clutter-free and well-lit to allow positive energy to circulate freely.
Puja Room / Sacred Space: The Northeast corner is the most sacred and suitable for a prayer room or altar. Idols and images should face East or West.
Common Vastu Defects and Non-Demolition Remedies
Not all Vastu defects require structural changes. Common remedies include placing copper pyramids, Vastu crystals, specific plants (such as Tulsi in the Northeast), mirrors to redirect energy, and colour therapy. Vedic yantras — especially the Vastu Purush Yantra — can neutralise most directional imbalances without any construction.
